Little Kids and iPods

My daughter loves to use the iPod, and she can navigate through screens and find the games she wants to play.  My daughter is almost 3!

Why did I post this?
If a 3 year old can work her way through an iPod, what does that mean for the future of education?  If our students are coming into our classrooms knowing how to do this already, does it change the way we teach?  I'm curious to hear your takes on education and technology!

  1. Technology is great in the classroom. As a math teacher, I sometimes find it difficult to implement new technologies into a lesson.

  2. wow...I think it's only a matter of time before we see more technology in the classroom. To me the big question still is: do our students have the skills to "explore" this kid-friendly technology? Do they know how to "learn" when given the familiarity of iPod technology...or will we still see the apathy?

  3. I think you have some good questions, Leanne. Students can definitely use the technology, but will they use it to learn our subjects?
Also, are they learning any more by using their iPod instead of a book, worksheet, etc.?
I feel more and more technology will be coming into classrooms, but am unsure if it will mean that more students can read, do math and think critically.

  4. Julie,
Excellent points! Students will be bringing more and more powerful electronic devices into our classrooms. At what point do we embrace it instead of completely disallow it. Your last points about students reading, doing math, and thinking critically is a valid one. That is where a technology integrationist could step in and help. I think effective use of technology in the classroom can still lead to reading, math, and critical thinking.

    Thanks for the comments!
